    Skydivers for many years have used hook knives as a safety device while parachuting. The hook knife can be used in a variety of circumstances. The hook knife is ideal in high stress situations where parachute nylon, parachute suspension line, or parachute risers need to be quickly cut away without cutting yourself. The hook knife will cut through parachute nylon, Spectra line, Vectran line, Dacron line, Type 17 riser webbing, and Type 8 riser webbing. The Z Knife is not meant to be used for cutting 17 riser webbing or Type 8 riser webbing.
    There have been a few reported cases of a suspension line getting caught under the grommet of the main container or a flap or pop top of the reserve container. In a situation like this where your main parachute is deploying but a suspension line is caught, it may be near impossible to clear the entanglement with your hand. With a hook knife however you would be able to cut the line, thereby freeing you main parachute to open, or provide the opportunity to execute your emergency procedures of releasing your main parachute and opening your reserve parachute.
    For people who practice and compete in CReW (Canopy Relative Work), a hook knife is a must. In fact many people flying CReW actually carry with them several hook knives for safety and instant accessibility. In the event of having a parachute wrap with either another parachutist or yourself, you may be forced into a situation where releasing your main parachute is not enough. If parachute suspension lines are wrapped around you and/or other parachutists the only option you will have is to quickly untangle yourself or cut yourself free. In many circumstances time is of the essence and the quicker the parachutists can untangle themselves, the less of a risk of injury.
    If you are a parachute rigger a hook knife is a nice tool to keep in your rigger kit bag or loft.
